Who runs Warehouse Management

The sectors where this one does the most work. Each has its own page.

What slows a warehouse down more than anything else?

Looking for things, and counting them twice. The time between reading an order line and putting a hand on the item is where the day goes, followed by every recount caused by the number on the screen disagreeing with the number on the shelf. Both come from movements nobody recorded.

How does receiving work when a delivery arrives?

Goods are checked against the purchase order on a scanner rather than against a printed list. Lines that match are received, differences are recorded instead of quietly accepted, and stock updates the moment the receipt is confirmed. Purchasing and accounting see the same receipt, so the supplier invoice matches against it.

How do you count stock without shutting the warehouse for a weekend?

By counting in pieces. A count can be created for one brand, one category, one group of products or a single aisle, and run while the warehouse keeps working. Several people can count at once, their results combine into one count, and differences go for approval before they change the stock records.

What does the movement log give a manager?

An answer to the question of what happened. Every receipt, transfer, pick, count and adjustment is recorded with the item, the quantity, the location, the time and the user. A stock difference becomes a short investigation instead of a discussion about who is probably responsible.

  • Where it went

Movements between shelves, between warehouses and on transfer trips are all recorded.

  • When

Timing shows whether a difference appeared before or after a delivery went out.

  • Who touched it

Each movement carries the user who made it, which changes behaviour on its own.

  • What it was worth

Because stock and accounting share one database, an adjustment posts a value and not only a quantity.

Can warehouse staff request stock themselves?

Yes. The warehouse team can raise a procurement request from inside the system, and it goes to whoever approves purchases rather than being shouted across the yard. The request keeps its date and its history, so nobody has to prove later that they asked for something three weeks ago.

What do you actually need to buy to run this properly?

Scanners or phones for the people who move stock, printed labels for locations and items, and a week or two of somebody's time to map the building into the system. The honest caveat is that hardware is the cheap part. Labelling the warehouse and holding the discipline is the real project.
